This is a two-day, intensive workshop presenting energy-efficient building techniques for builders, designers, planners, and homeowners. It is an excellent opportunity to learn the latest construction methods related to residential energy efficiency.
The building technologies introduced are based on energy conservation through the use of insulation, air/vapor retarders, insulating windows, and controlled ventilation systems, among other methods. ACHP Instructors are well trained and highly experienced with state-of-the-art building methods. They teach techniques for maximum energy efficiency and conservation for homes built in northern climates. ACHP has prepared and published a manual for this workshop, Northern Comfort: Advanced Cold Climate Home Building Techniques. The manual is included in the cost of the workshop.
This course meets the State of Alaska Division of Occupational Licensing educational requirements that qualify general contractors to take the state Residential Endorsement exam.

This one day workshop is designed to expand upon the knowledge of residential heating and ventilation introduced in our standard two day Advanced Cold Climate Home Building workshop. Successful completion of the first, two-day workshop is a prerequisite to this new heating and ventilation workshop. This workshop qualifies for 8 hours of Continuing Education credit for residential builders. Builders, mechanical contractors, designers, and all others who attend this workshop will learn the principles and practices involved in making appropriate heating and ventilating decisions. They will come to understand how to determine heating and ventilating requirements and how to solve heating and ventilation problems. There are two elements that need to be completed for BPI Building Analyst I certification: 1. Written Examination; 2. Field Examination. Alaska Craftsman Home Program is offering both the written and field examinations in our Anchorage offices and throughout the state. Please note that the written examination must be completed before field examinations will be scheduled. The total cost for written examination is $225 and $500 for the field examination.
Written Exam
This exam consists of 100 questions covering the topics covered in the BPI Technical Standard Manual:
Fundamentals of Building Science
Fundamentals of Buildings and their Systems
Fundamentals and Application of Measurement and Verification of Building Performance
Fundamentals of BPI Standards & Project Specifications
Fundamentals of Analyzing Building Systems
Fundamentals of Professional Ethics, Conduct & Communication
Students are required to score 70% or higher to pass the written examination. Participants are permitted to bring a single copy of the BPI Building Analyst Technical Standard, pencil, and scientific calculator. Scratch paper will be provided, and students will have no more than TWO HOURS to complete the exam.
Technical Requirements
Students must bring their own internet accessible laptop. Wireless and wired connections will be provided, as the exam will be administered over the internet.
Proctored Field Exam
This 2 hour exam will cover the application of materials covered in the written examination. The field exam is open book. No electronic assistance will be allowed. Students must arrive at the testing site on time tardiness will lead to unnecessary forfeiture of tuition fees. ACHP strongly encourages students to bring their own test equipment. Instructors are not permitted to aid students in the setup or operation of equipment. Familiarizing oneself with equipment only wastes time which is in short supply during the exam. This course focuses on basic safety testing of combustion appliances, paying specific attention to appliance drafting under "worst-case" conditions. Proper use of the digital manometer, draft gauges, chemical smoke, and techniques for resolving pressure problems will be covered in this course. Emphasis will be placed on identification of combustion appliance malfunctions, not repair. Students will learn to predict and control problems associated with house airtightness and duct work. This workshop will familiarize Mechanical Administrators with the AkWarm rating process and explains the process that an energy rater goes through when providing a homeowner with a report suggesting improvements to their heating, water heating, and ventilation systems. These common improvements are creating a good deal of work for the mechanical trades, as well as a good deal of confusion. This 1- day class offers 4-hours of continuing education credit (CEU's) for mechanical contractors, providing Mechanical Administrators with CEU's and strategies for working with consumers and energy raters.
